Dr. Yuzhuo Wang
PhD – The University of Hong Kong, 1997
Post-doctoral Fellow – University of California, San Francisco, 2000
Senior Scientist, The Vancouver Prostate Centre
Senior Scientist, Dept. Experimental Therapeutics, BC Cancer Agency
Associate Professor, Dept. Urologic Sciences, University of British Columbia
Dr. Wang has a dual appointment as a Senior Scientist at the Vancouver Prostate Centre and the BC Cancer Agency. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Since 1997, Dr. Wang has published over 60 peer-reviewed original articles and review papers, including publications in Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, the EMBO Journal, Oncogene, PNAS, Cancer Cell, Differentiation and the FASEB journal. As a principal investigator, he is well funded by a number of funding agencies (e.g., Canadian Institutes of Health Research). Presently, Dr. Wang serves as an editorial member of the Journal of Chinese Clinical Medicine and Journal of Thoracic Disease. He is a reviewer for many journals including Cancer Research and Clinical Cancer Research.
In addition to proposing novel hypotheses on “prostate stem cells” (Wang et al, 2001) and “epithelial-immune cell transition (EIT)” (Low et al, 2009; Gout et al 2009), Dr. Wang is also responsible for the development of a novel method for establishing patient-derived cancer tissue xenograft models in SCID mice with a high engraftment rate. So far, his living tumor laboratory (www.livingtumorlab.com) has developed over 150 transplantable tumor tissue lines that closely resemble patients’ malignancies in terms of histopathology, genetic profiles and drug sensitivities. His current research continues focusing on applications of such xenograft models for: (i) discovery and validation of potential biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets, (ii) preclinical drug efficacy studies in anti-cancer therapeutics development, and (iii) personalized cancer therapy.
Dr. Wang has received numerous awards for his academic achievements in cancer research, such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation Research Award (2006), the Translation Research Award from Roche (2009), the Overseas Chinese Scholars Award (Distinguished Young Scholar Award, Category B) from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2009), and the Innovative Scholar Award from the International Cancer Alliance for Research and Education (ICARE) (2010).
