Purang Abolmaesumi received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and his Ph.D. degree from UBC. From 2002 to 2009, he was a faculty member at Queen’s University, School of Computing. He then joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UBC, where he is now an Associate Professor and holds a Canada Research Chair, Tier II, in Biomedical Engineering. He is also an Associate Member in the Department of Urologic Sciences.

Dr. Abolmaesumi’s research on ultrasound image guidance for surgery and therapy has been recognized internationally and nationally with more than 20 awards. He has also made significant contributions to the field through building the foundations for open-source software for ultrasound-guided interventions, now available as the PLUS package and is maintained by the research staff at Queen’s University with many users worldwide. The ultrasound image segmentation techniques he has developed have been cited among the top ten most influential techniques in the field, and have been the foundation for a prostate segmentation approach that has been used at the BC Cancer Agency on more than 1,000 patients.

Dr. Abolmaesumi is the author of more than 160 journal and peer-reviewed conference publications, and has served on the program committees of the leading conferences in the field. Over the last five years, he has also served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

Robbie Burns Gala at the Pan Pacific Vancouver: January 25

The Pan Pacific Vancouver is hosting a celebration of Scotland's most famous poet, Robbie Burns, on January 25.  The event will include fundraising for Prostate Cancer Canada's Plaid for Dad campaign. There will be a traditional itinerary, starting with the official piping in of the guests, with exclusive malt tastings, authentic Scottish cuisine celebrating the haggis and ending the evening with a chorus of Auld Lang Syne.
