Congratulations to Dr. Amina Zoubeidi who’s distinguished track record of urological research has made her the 2023 recipient of the SWIU-SBUR Award for Excellence in Urologic Research. This award will be announced as part of the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR) at the American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Meeting taking place on, April 30 in Chicago.

Congratulations to Dr. Ryan Flannigan who received the 2022 Rising Stars in Urology Research Award at American Urological Association (AUA) and the Urology Care Foundation! This award offers up to five years of supplemental salary support to urologists with excellent scientific and ethical standing, who have successfully competed for career development awards. Dr Flannigan is an assistant professor in the Department of Urological Science at the University of British Columbia.

CFI grant, $312,500, was awarded to a research program led by Dr Ryan Flannigan, titled Infrastructure to Establish a Combined Regenerative and Precision Medicine Reproductive Research Program.


In Canada, approximately 2440 boys aged less than 15 will be diagnosed with cancer each year. Fortunately, the field of oncology has made significant improvements in survival rates, which are estimated to be 83%. However, treatments will leave up to 97% of pediatric cancer survivors with no sperm production, despite over 75% desiring to have biological children.

Our spin-off company, Sustained Therapeutics, has developed a soft polymer gel that is being clinically tested to deliver pain relieving drugs via local injection to targeted sites in the body in a highly controlled manner. The gel is designed to release the medication slowly, potentially providing relief over days, weeks, or even months. This technology may have other uses for treating fibrotic and inflammatory diseases, cancer, and more.

Congratulations to Drs. Michael Cox, Kish Wasan, Nathan Lack, Syam Somasekharan and their teams on being awarded the 5 year Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant for an amount of C$ 956,250.00. The grant is titled, 'Understanding epigenetic regulation and modulation of cell stress responses by the cholesterol transporter, scavenger receptor-B1 as a novel target for treating advanced prostate cancer.'

Congratulations to Dr Stephen Choi, a postdoctoral cancer researcher in the Urologic Sciences Department at the University of British Columbia, who is earning the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Postdoctoral for his work to develop a groundbreaking treatment for prostate cancers. Turning conventional wisdom on its head, Choi discovered that suppressing lactic acid, a byproduct generated by cancer cells, can prevent cancer from spreading. His work is now being used to develop an innovative, low-cost drug therapy.
