Movember, the month-long fundraiser for men's health, has begun.  The funds raised in Canada support men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and their men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.

Many men survive prostate cancer, but thousands of others — whose cancer spreads — inevitably develop resistance to even the most promising treatments, leaving them with few medical options and a dwindling span of life.

Now, armed with a new $10 million grant, a multi-centre “dream team’’ of scientists is embarking on a groundbreaking undertaking into personalized medicine. The goal: to overcome therapeutic resistance in the disease and revolutionize treatment for patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Vancouver, BC – Researchers at the Vancouver Prostate Centre at Vancouver Coastal Health and UBC are undertaking a revolutionary approach to find new drug therapies and molecular targets that will help prostate cancer patients who have become resistant to treatment.

A new study co-authored by Dr. Larry Goldenberg, urologic surgeon and researcher at the Vancouver Prostate Centre and head of the Department Urologic Sciences at UBC, has shown that prostate cancer patients who are given a “drug holiday” have the same survival rate as the continuous treatment group, and a far better quality of life.

Drs. Martin Gleave and Colin Collins part of new pan-Canadian prostate cancer network

A new pan-Canadian network of prostate cancer researchers formed by the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) aims to address this need with approximately $4-million provided by the Terry Fox Foundation and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. The funding was announced today at the CHUM Research Centre (CRCHUM).
