Co-op Student, Flannigan Lab

The Vancouver Prostate Centre (VPC) has an exceptional opportunity available for a full-time, 4 to 12 months, Science Co-op Student to join Dr. Ryan Flannigan’s research team beginning in January 2020. This is an opportunity to work with highly motivated colleagues in a research-oriented, creative and dynamic environment.

The Vancouver Prostate Centre
VPC has a large, multi-disciplinary research program that undertakes basic, clinic, and translational research. It is a National Centre of Excellence and a designated Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research. It is affiliated with the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

Flannigan Lab
The Flannigan Lab studies mechanisms of severe male infertility and defective spermatogenesis. The goal of this research program is to identify novel therapeutic targets for men with severe male infertility and to establish regenerative medicine techniques for these patients. Research involves multiple platforms for single cell sequencing and multi-OMICs investigations, in addition to human iPSC cell differentiation, organoids and 3-D bioprinting. The student will gain experience in basic biology research methods such as cell culture, but will also gain experience in advanced applications such as single cell sequencing, organoids and iPSC cells.

Job Requirements
Preferred candidates for this position are 3rd or 4th year Biology/Life Sciences undergraduates looking to gain exposure to a research laboratory. This position is suitable for students looking for a minimum 4-month placement, with the possibility of extension up to 12-months. Minimum qualifications include a solid foundation of scientific knowledge, basic lab skills (pipetting, using centrifuges and balances, dilutions, cell culturing), and strong organizational and communication skills. Experience with specific laboratory techniques (cell culture, RNA extraction, sequencing), and a previous co-op placement is an asset but not required.
